We explore the role of ECAs in spurring the transition to a sustainable economy, highlighting the significant increase in global renewable energy commitments, with 42% for guarantees and 57% for direct lending in 2023. Despite traditional carbon-intensive industries still attracting larger financing volumes, the gap is narrowing, especially among E3F members. We address the need for greater flexibility in ECA frameworks, the role of untied finance, enhanced risk-taking for emerging technologies, and increased support for green projects in developing markets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Looking further across the ESG spectrum, while green transactions remain central, there is growing recognition of governance and social projects as part of the broader sustainable finance agenda. The discussion will highlight the net impact of these initiatives and explore how the tools of export finance can be leveraged to drive meaningful environmental and social outcomes.
